1 ½ cups white sugar 3 egg yolks, beaten ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder 3 tablespoons cornstarch 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract ½ teaspoon salt 3 cups milk 1 tablespoon butter 1 (9 inch) pie crust, baked 1 cup frozen whipped topping, thawed

In a large bowl, beat together sugar and egg yolks until smooth. Stir in cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt. Add milk and whisk gently.

Transfer the blend into a large saucepan. Simmer on medium heat, stirring all the time, until it comes to a boil and is thick enough to coat the back of a metal spoon.

Take off the heat and mix in the butter and vanilla. Remove and allow to cool slightly.

Pour the mixture into the prepared pastry shell and chill the pie in the refrigerator until it sets, which usually takes 2 to 4 hours. Garnish the pie with whipped topping before serving.
